Signing up to Change

In a life of firsts one woman’s journey to connect New Zealanders to the suffragists of the past.

Many of us paused last year to reflect on the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women gaining the vote. Through the tenacious endeavours of a former pupil in creating an index to the signatories on the 1893 petition, there will always remain a connection between St Matthew’s and this historic document.

Early Boarding at St Matthew’s

The ability to offer suitable accommodation for “pupils from the country” had been a priority for the Trustees of St Matthew’s School for Girls seeking to grow the school roll in those early formative years. In May 1917 that aspiration was realised with the Trustees announcing that 24 Lincoln Road had been secured for the school to rent as a Hostel and that applications were open for the new term starting 29 May.
